My top recommendation is “Tee-Gak-Tae-Gak,” which you can find in the Central market in Sokcho. While you may come across this brand in several places around Korea, the true origin is here, and nothing beats the original, you know. Abai Sundae is a type of Korean blood sausage typically stuffed with glutinous rice, pork intestines, and various vegetables such as seasoned beef, cabbage, and mung bean sprouts. According to “A Literary Study of Sundae,” the original version of Abai Sundae from Hamgyeong Province(which is in North Korea) is characterized by the use of grains like glutinous rice and glass noodles, with a prominent use of seasonings.

The term “Abai” originally comes from the Hamgyeong Province dialect, meaning large and abundant. Even when eaten instead of a full meal, it provides a substantial amount of food.

Squid sundae, on the other hand, originated in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, during the Korean War when refugees from Hamgyeong Province came down to Sokcho and couldn’t find pig intestines, so they started using squid instead. This became the origin of Sokcho’s Abai Sundae. The distinctive feature is stuffing glutinous rice, cabbage, and mung bean sprouts inside squid.
